Christmas Breakfast Club

On Friday 19th December a number of Year 7 and 8 students took part in a Christmas Breakfast.  The students organised food, decorated the room and sent hand written invitations to members of their Year Team.  There were Christmas songs playing, quizzes to take part in and crackers to pull.  Both students and staff had a very enjoyable time!  Thank you to Mr Davis for running Breakfast Club throughout the year.

Year 7 Celebration Assembly

Year 7 celebrated their success, having completed their first term at Winston.  It was a great privilege
to watch so many students receive certificates and awards and for a large number of students to be recognised as making a positive contribution to our school.  I am very proud of the way in which Year 7s represent the values of Winston and enjoy their school life by following the 'Winston Way'.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our families at Winston, members of the local and wider community a

Peaceful and Happy Christmas.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our school, we look forward to working with you in the  New Year.

Winston Christmas Selection Box

The Winter Concert

I attended an amazing concert on Wednesday evening.  Winston is full of talent and this was our opportunity to showcase the work that has taken place this term.  The Choir, the Orchestra, the Keyboard Group, the Percussion Group, the Year 7 Singers, the Session Band, the Wind Quintet and a number of excellent individual performances, created an evening of wonderful entertainment.  Within one term Mr Drake, our new Head of Music, has transformed the department with a number of new groups and an expectation of quality in everything we do. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the evening but especially to Mr Drake for ensuring that we can enjoy this essential dimension of our school.  As well as the children, it was also great to see so many staff performing in the groups, supporting back stage, as well as attending the performance.

Christmas Lunch

Our Administration Staff enjoying Christmas Lunch
Students and staff were able to enjoy a delicious Christmas Dinner, produced by Catering Academy on Tuesday.  Our staff also helped to create the festive spirit by wearing Christmas jumpers!  Some Year groups are wearing their Christmas jumpers to raise money for charity.

Asdan Christmas Coffee Morning

A lovely group of Year 9 students invited staff to a Christmas Coffee Morning they had planned and prepared.  They greeted us at the door, showed us to our seats and took orders for coffee and tea, as well as mincepies and cakes.  Well done Year 9.

Celebration Assemblies

Every year group has been celebrating the successes achieved this term.  We have enjoyed performances from individuals and the choir, as well as congratulating those students who ahve been awarded subject prizes.  Those students with 100% attendance rates have been recognised and one lucky winner has been rewarded with a voucher, having been selected randomly from the list.  I have enjoyed the buzz of excitment that is present within each year group and the way in which they appreciate the success of their peers, as well as recognising the contribution made by staff.

Christmas Cakes

Year 10 had the opportunity to learn how to ice and decorate a Christmas Cake.  We were very fortunate that Ben Piette of London House, Old Woking, agreed to come in and judge the cakes.  It was a very difficult decision, as the standard achieved was very high.  However, it was agreed that 1st place went to Emily Betson, 2nd Place to Anna Somerville and 3rd place Jessica Bolger.  Both Charlotte Hague and Alena Day were highly commended.  Well done to everyone.

Year 10 Bookends

Year 10 option groups in Design and Technology (10E1 & 10F1) have been designing and making bookends.  This project presented a number of design challenges, which the groups tackled with enthusiasm and creativity and as you can see below, have realised them very successfully.  Superb work Year 10; Well Done!

Christmas at Winston

The Winston Choir

Our new school choir was asked to sing carols at Barclay's Bank, in Woking.  Mr Drake and several other members of staff took the students along on Friday morning, to share with our community some music for Christmas.  We would like to thank the staff of Barclay's Bank for inviting us and for the hospitality shown during the visit.  I am sure that the members of the public will have enjoyed the performance as much as our students enjoyed singing.

 THE CAROL SERVICE

For the second year running Pete Matthews of St John's Church welcomed us to celebrate Christmas with a traditional service of carols and readings.  Our students were central and produced the complex music, sang carols and presented passages telling the story of the birth of Christ.  Thank you to Mr Donaldson, Mr Drake, Miss Ashworth and Mr Jolly for ensuring that we had an opportunity to come together, to share, to reflect and to celebrate at this time of year.  I was delighted that Linda Kemeny, County Councillor (Cabinet Member for Schools and Learning) and David Barter, Chair of Governors, along with a number of other governors were able to share this experience with us.  I hope that you will consider joining us next year.

Christmas Boxes

As part of the work that our students do to support charities, staff and students have collected non-perishable items to be distributed to those in need this Christmas.  The collection was organised by Mrs Taylor, the Headteacher's PA, on behalf of the Woking Lions.  Thank you to eveyone who contributed.

This Week at Winston

Our Library

As part of Winston’s long term plans for the LRC becoming a more resourceful tool for students and teachers, there is now a dedicated librarian tasked with this. As such the library’s opening times have been extended: Monday-Wednesday it is open to students from 8am before school, break and lunch time, and until 5pm after school; on Thursdays and Fridays it is open before school and until 4 pm after school. This is to accommodate quiet study, reading, homework and revision. You can keep up to date with our progress in our library mission on our dedicated LRC blog, WCSC The Written Word: http://wcsctww.blogspot.co.uk/

Year 7 at the Panto

On Wednesday 10th December 31 Year 7’s were treated to a night out to see the Christmas Panto, Aladdin, at Woking Theatre.  We attended the evening performance and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.  There was plenty of singing, dancing and joining in with ‘Wishy Washy you’re so dishy’!  Highlights of the night were the comical mistakes made by the cast, the 12 days of Christmas sung by the main performers and the shout out for Winston Churchill.

Christmas Wishes From Year 7

I received a lovely surprise today; 7TMO sent an amazing range of lovely Christmas Cards.  Inside were some super messages, including positive comments about Winston.
Thank you 7TMO, is was very thoughtful of you.

 Jamie Lewis: Gymnast

The Under 14 boys took to the stage in the afternoon and Woking had Jamie Lewis competing.  Jamie Lewis has had an amazing year and rounded it off nicely with a performance never seen before in Great Britain!  Jamie competed brilliantly on all apparatus and was crowned Under 14 British All-Around Champion.  Jamie scored an amazing 82.2 (the highest score ever by an Under 14 gymnast in Great Britain) and finished 6.2 marks ahead of the 2nd placed gymnast.  Jamie won Gold on Floor, Pommels, Parallel Bars and High Bar and Silver on Rings.  Well done Jamie!!
